My mom doesn\u2019t exactly understand why I enjoy traveling solo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see why you don\u2019t just travel with a group,\u201d she said to me some weeks ago as I was discussing my upcoming travel plans.<\/p>\n

Part of it is that she\u2019s secretly hoping that if I travel with a group I\u2019ll meet someone.<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t have to say it; I know her game.\u00a0 But her first reason\u2014her most important reason\u2014is I\u2019m her only daughter and she\u2019s concerned about my safety.<\/p>\n

So how to balance her perfectly legitimate concern for my well-being with my desire to see the world unfettered?<\/p>\n

Lie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Okay, maybe that\u2019s a bit harsh. Let\u2019s call it \u201ccreative storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

About a month ago, I wrote a post about a solo cross-country trip<\/a> I took almost two years ago. While I was planning my adventure, I\u2019d mentioned the trip to my mom but I never told her exactly when I was leaving. And I kept it that way.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m used to being on the phone with my mom almost every night, so I thought it would be hard to hide the truth from her. Turns out it was easier than I thought.<\/p>\n

On that first night on the road, after I\u2019d arrived at my hotel for the night, I called her. When she asked me what I was doing, I casually told her, \u201cOh, I\u2019m in bed.\u201d What I failed to mention was that I was in a bed in a hotel somewhere in Ohio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And the next night? \u201cJust back from Target,\u201d I said nonchalantly. \u00a0Never told her it was the Super Target in Rochester, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

Oops.<\/em><\/p>\n

We continued that way across much of the country. By the third night, I was a pro. On the fourth night, I was grateful for the lack of a cell phone signal in Yellowstone National Park. She certainly didn\u2019t need to know that my tent was mere feet from the path of a 2,000-pound bison.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Somehow, by the fifth night, I just couldn\u2019t do it anymore so I didn\u2019t call her at all.<\/p>\n

Six days on the road and she was none the wiser. When I finally arrived in Seattle, I called her and dropped the bomb.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t talk to me for almost a week.<\/p>\n

Years later, we look back laugh. I think she understands now that I just didn\u2019t want her to have to worry about me but in doing that, I almost destroyed a trust that took a lifetime to build.<\/p>\n

So how do I handle it now? I tell her just as much she needs to know. <\/strong>I think that\u2019s something both of us can live with.<\/p>\n

I know she\u2019ll never stop worrying about me, no matter where I go. And even though she might be a bit of a worry-wart, I love that no matter what I do, I always have her support.<\/p>\n
