Why? There\u2019s just something so positive and uplifting about them. Nobody ever has anything bad to say about anyone else in cemeteries. Everyone\u2019s a \u201cfaithful husband\u201d or a \u201cdevoted mother\u201d or a \u201cloyal son.\u201d It\u2019s as though death is a great purifier that removes the dross of a life before it\u2019s preserved for perpetuity. Negative attributes are diminished \u00a0and the positive qualities come into focus.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As a history buff, I enjoy reading about the life stories of people who lived long before I was even a twinkle in my mother\u2019s eye. There something about knowing that people lived and died long before me that\u2019s humbling in a good sort of way.<\/p>\n<p>So I was beyond excited for my trip to Savannah because I knew I\u2019d have a chance to see and hear (and retell) some wonderful old tales from storytellers with stilled tongues. But with all there was to see and do in Savannah, I only had time to visit two of Savannah\u2019s more popular dwellings for the dead: Colonial Park Cemetery and Bonaventure Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>But what about if you\u2019re visiting Savannah and you only have time to visit either Colonial Park Cemetery or Bonaventure Cemetery? Let these resting places for the dead go head to head.<\/p>\n<h2>Choosing\u00a0between Savannah\u2019s big guns:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Looking for a quiet contemplative spot?<\/strong> Opt for Bonaventure. While Colonial Park does offer a few options for a serene sit-down, Bonaventure is more secluded. The massive grounds are situated on a tract of land on the Wilmington River. On a beautiful day, it really doesn\u2019t get much more scenic and tranquil than this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hot for old, lichen-covered headstones?<\/strong> Your better bet is Colonial Park cemetery. It\u2019s almost a full century older than Bonaventure Cemetery with deliciously worn and patina\u2019d headstones to match.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_898\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-898\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-898 size-large\" title=\"mary-ann\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/mary-ann-682x1024.jpg?resize=682%2C1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-898\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of my favorite grave markers from Colonial Park Cemetery from 1841!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ornate monuments more your style?<\/strong> Bonaventure Cemetery is your thrill. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen so many intricately carved monuments to dead people all together in one place. It\u2019s pretty amazing\u2026if you\u2019re into that sort of thing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_899\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-899\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-899 size-large\" title=\"corinne\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/corinne-682x1024.jpg?resize=682%2C1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Believe it or not, this was one of the less ornate monuments at Bonaventure Cemetery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>On a tight budget?<\/strong> Choose Colonial Park. Getting out to Bonaventure cemetery can be a little more challenging if you don\u2019t have a car rental, although there are a few tour companies that offer a driving tour through the enormous grounds. A round-trip taxi fare from my hotel in the Historic District to Bonaventure was close to $30 while Colonial Park was less than 30 minutes walking distance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Searching for celebrities?<\/strong> Bonaventure\u2019s got you (and them!) covered. One of Savannah\u2019s most famous sons, songwriter and composer Johnny Mercer, is prominently buried there, as well as a few other lesser-known famous folk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Short on time?<\/strong> Colonial Park&#8217;s your place. It\u2019s in the heart of the city and significantly smaller than Bonaventure. You can comfortably spend about an hour in Colonial Park without feeling rushed while Bonaventure requires at least a few hours to do it justice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Seeking Savannah&#8217;s \u201cBird Girl\u201d statue?<\/strong> You won\u2019t find her at Bonaventure Cemetery anymore. She now resides on the second floor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telfair.org\/visit\/telfair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telfair Academy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, I only visit cemeteries during the day because I\u2019d get way too spooked at night, so for the creepiness factor, I can&#8217;t help you.
