It&#8217;s a must-see stop in San Simeon along California&#8217;s Pacific Coast Highway.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;d wanted to visit <a title=\"Hearst Castle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hearstcastle.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hearst Castle<\/a> for ages<\/strong>, having first heard about it because of my appreciation for Orson Welles&#8217; cinematic masterpiece<a title=\"Citizen Kane - IMDB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0033467\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em>Citizen Kane<\/em><\/a>. For those in the dark, the film is based on the life of William Randolph Hearst, the early twentieth-century multi-hyphenate media mogul, with fingers in almost everything from newspapers to the movies. He was one of the richest men of his day. Hearst Castle was only one\u00a0of his homes; it took almost thirty years to build and furnish\u00a0(construction ended in 1947)\u00a0for a sum of just under ten million dollars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hearst called it &#8220;La Cuenta Encantada&#8221;&#8211;the Enchanted Hill&#8211;and I can&#8217;t think of a more apt description for this hilltop oasis. Hearst Castle completely charmed me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What charmed me wasn&#8217;t exactly the house itself.<\/strong> It&#8217;s a grand house with eclectic architectural styles inspired by locations all over the world and architectural detailing so ornate, the facade is almost vulgar in its extravagance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"hearst-castle-california\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/hearst-castle.jpg.jpg?resize=600%2C900\" alt=\"Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>It wasn&#8217;t the decor, <\/strong>although I really appreciated seeing the Spanish hand-carved wooden ceiling panels in the dining room and the antique Belgian tapestries hanging from the walls.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The dining room ceiling at San Simeon's Hearst Castle\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8465\/8092022164_c7ba56b235_z.jpg?resize=427%2C640\" alt=\"Hearst' Castle's Dining Room ceiling\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Marble statue, Hearst Castle\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8329\/8092016357_f3b121ffa0_z.jpg?resize=427%2C640\" alt=\"Hearst Castle marble statue\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>It wasn&#8217;t the lavish rose gardens or the citrus trees or the gold-tipped succulents scattered throughout the grounds.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Citrus and palm trees, Hearst Castle\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8335\/8092021576_fb3757b7a8_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"Citrus and palm trees, Hearst Castle\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"hearst-castle-flowers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8170\/7918169332_106e577211_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"hearst-castle-succulents\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8445\/7918168772_411e8f03f9_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>It wasn&#8217;t the deep blue waters of the Greek-inspired Neptune pool either<\/strong>, although I found myself wishing I could have been a fly on the wall at some of Mr. Hearst&#8217;s infamously fabulous house parties.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"hearst-castle-pool\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8177\/7918169960_20cd8a81b2_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Neptune Pool, Hearst Castle\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8190\/8092015921_7906fe4391_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"Neptune Pool, Hearst Castle\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"hearst-castle\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8180\/7918169642_eb92f45579_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I think what charmed me most were the views from this secluded Shangri-La:<\/strong> from the miles-long bus ride on a narrow road&#8211;sometimes one lane wide&#8211;winding its way to the top; the vista to the north overlooking acres and acres of \u00a0Hearst property; \u00a0the landscape to the west as seen from the balcony of Casa del Mar (House of the Sea), one of the estate&#8217;s cottages. I stayed there for the longest time on that balcony, looking past clumps of green trees and vast expanses of wheat-colored grass, down over San Simeon out to the Pacific Ocean.
