Too much activity and too many people in the city center. <a title=\"Brugge Beyond the Grote Markt\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wanderlustforone.com\/destinations\/brugge-beyond-the-grote-markt\/\">I enjoyed my trip off the beaten path<\/a> but I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d go back again.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels was too cold. As the capital of Belgium and of the European Union, Brussels felt a bit too, well, buttoned-up.<\/p>\n<p>But Antwerp? <strong>Antwerp was just right<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I\u2019d visited Antwerp during the weekend when the residents were out and about their leisure but I was drawn in by the city&#8217;s energy.\u00a0Cosmopolitan, artsy, and smart enough not to take itself too seriously, <strong>I had a blast in Antwerp<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2014my time in Antwerp didn\u2019t start out that great. It took me two hours just to figure out which bus to take to my hostel , the bus which subsequently broke down less than a minute after beginning its route. The hostel I stayed in? Nice people, but the computer was broken when I arrived, so they couldn&#8217;t check me in and then my room was frigid, the bed hard, and the door handle kept coming out in my hand each time I closed the door. But in spite of the missteps and misadventures, Antwerp dazzled me.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1698\" title=\"Brabo Fountain, Grote Markt, Antwerpen, Belgium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/belgium-antwerp-antwerpen-grote-markt-brabo-fountain.jpg?resize=600%2C399\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was the beautiful Brabo fountain in the central market square.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1699\" title=\"Pieter Paul Rubens statue, Groenplaatz, Antwerp, Belgium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/belgium-antwerp-antwerpen-groenplaats-rubens-statue.jpg?resize=600%2C399\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Encounters with Antwerp&#8217;s most famous son, painter <a title=\"Peter Paul Rubens\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peterpaulrubens.org\/\">Peter Paul Rubens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1700\" title=\"The Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerpen, Belgium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/belgium-antwerp-antwerpen-onze-lieve-vrouwekathedraal.jpg?resize=385%2C600\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal<\/em>, <a title=\"The Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dekathedraal.be\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Cathedral of Our Lady<\/a>, rising above the city, warmed by the setting evening sun, visible for what seemed like miles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1701\" title=\"Antwerpen Centraal Station, Antwerpen, Belgium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/belgium-antwerp-antwerpen-train-station.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><a title=\"Riding the Rails in Belgium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wanderlustforone.com\/destinations\/riding-the-rails-in-belgium\/\">Antwerpen Centraal<\/a>, perhaps one of the most striking train stations I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1702\" title=\"The Lange Wapper Statue at Steen Castle, Antwerpen, Belgium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/belgium-antwerp-antwerpen-lange-wapper-statue.jpg?resize=398%2C600\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finding humor in the <em>Lange Wapper<\/em> statue at Steen Castle (I couldn\u2019t help thinking the smaller are figures are looking up at the giant whispering to each other \u201cDid you see the size of his junk?\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1703\" title=\"Groenplaats, Antwerpen, Belgium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wanderlustforone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/belgium-antwerp-antwerpen-groenplaats-600x398.jpg?resize=600%2C398\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having adventures in mispronunciation.
