Whenever you plan a trip, there are lots of resources in print and online for all the various things you might want to see and do. As I prepared to travel to Belgium, I did a lot of reading about which attractions were worth visiting, where I could eat the best frites<\/em>, and how to make the most of my time there.<\/p>\n

But then there’s the stuff the guides leave out.<\/strong> Here’s my list of 14 things no one tells you when you’re planning a trip to Belgium:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. You\u00a0might hate it and wish you’d stayed at home<\/a>.<\/li>\n
    2. You might have to pay to use the public restrooms.<\/li>\n
    3. The letters on the computer keyboards have a different layout.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n

      Zhqt the…?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
        \n
      1. The\u00a0panhandlers are incredibly persistent and creative.<\/li>\n
      2. Dutch doesn\u2019t sound the way it looks\u2026.except when it does.<\/li>\n
      3. You\u2019ll feel like a schlub because\u00a0everyone will put your fashion sense to shame.<\/li>\n
      4. You\u2019ll drink more beer than water.<\/li>\n
      5. Ketchup will take second place as your favorite condiment to eat with fries\u2026<\/li>\n
      6. \u2026but just don\u2019t call them \u201cFrench\u201d fries\u2014someone will correct you.<\/li>\n
      7. You might get run over by a bicycle.<\/strong>\n

      8. You might develop an addiction to street waffles<\/a>.<\/li>\n
      9. You\u2019ll get lost constantly.<\/li>\n
      10. You\u2019ll feel like you\u2019re completely out of control\u2026<\/li>\n
